They said it was for my safety. I found the apartment through a real estate broker and paid one month advance, two months security and one month broker’s fee. My landlord has disappeared and refuses to give me back my two months security deposit. I have since been placed in an HPD shelter which is a rundown hotel in Manhattan NY. It does not have a television, AC, or fan. The room is just big enough for a bed, dresser and small refrigerator. The room also, has one window which does not have a screen.
Also, there is a community bathroom which is full of defecation and roaches. My room the refrigerator is full of dead roaches and eggs. The bathrooms do not have toilet tissue, nor was I given any toiletries or food since I have been here.
I was told I would meet with a social/case worker once a week and he would help me. I have not met with anyone as of yet. When I do ask where he is I was told on vacation and no one knows when he will return.
I have been hospitalized twice because I have had both of my hips replaced prior and the stress and aggravation caused my left leg to swell up. I spent 4 days in the hospital for that and high blood pressure which is also a result of the above.
After returning to the shelter I became severely depressed and suicidal. I have since been hospitalized a second time for physic evaluation. Nonetheless, I'm back in the shelter after three days of evaluation.
This place is like a war zone, there is constant arguing and fighting among the residents, the place is full of flies, and the bathrooms are a nightmare. My room feels like a furnace because there is no air, I can barely breathe.
I have contacted HPD several times but, they are rude and treat me like I garbage. I did nothing wrong and I don't understand how they could treat a human being like this. They have ruined my life. All of my possessions also were sealed in my apartment by HPD and I do not have any access.
Someone please help me to find the financial means to get out of here. I think I may really lose my mind if I don't. I receive a small pension and I am trying to save as much as possible. But, the shelter I am is in an expensive neighborhood and I can only buy prepared foods cause there is nowhere for me to cook.
